A Year to Remember
“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” – Seneca
Here at Creative Gateways, as with everyone around the world, we are once again nearing an inexorable shifting of the sands. One year is ending and a new one beginning. The traditional paradox is present as well: the year feels like it flew by, even though we had so many exciting events and changes. We celebrated the one year anniversary of Creative Gateways in September, an important and heartening milestone in our exciting journey. Creative Gateways was also thrilled to become a member of the Sedona Gallery Association.
And that is only the beginning. As Creative Gateways and AMusinGlass founder Pilisa Rainbow Lady explains, “This year was full of excitement in the AMusinGlass studio, we started working on larger glass projects – including fused glass inserts for doors and desks, we had lots of students attending our classes, and we’re about to add monthly open studio opportunities for guests. I’m looking forward to what the new year might have in store!”
We were incredibly pleased to welcome some new talent to the Creative Gateways family, even as we said a bittersweet goodbye to a friend. In June of this year, Angela Palmer joined us as the new Gallery Director, whose background in both the arts and business helped elevate the gallery to a new level. October saw Laura Hines arrive as our newest resident artist. Her detailed and exceptional illustrations added another unique flavor to the gallery, and expanded the scope of our exhibited mediums. Change works in more than one way, however, as our former watercolorist Meg Monroe moved on from Creative Gateways and relocated to New Mexico. Although we miss her presence in the gallery, we wish Meg all the luck in the world in her new endeavors.
Part of the goal of Creative Gateways is to have a collective space that cultivates a collaborative environment – a space where resident artists could work with and be inspired by each other. Each artist here brings their own personal skills and experiences, together forming a wonderful artistic melting pot. It has been wonderful to see collaboration between our artists: father-and-daughter team Terry and Marika Israelson infusing both their personalities into singular works of glass art, husband and wife Michael and Sumati Colpitts creating engrossing ceramic sculptures, Marika and Laura combining their glass and illustration skills to make incredibly effective screen-printed pieces, Pilisa helping teach various fused glass techniques to all of our artists, and so much more. It has filled the gallery with an infectious spirit of harmony, affecting visitors and artists alike.
New Year, New Cheer
“The new year stands before us, like a chapter in a book, waiting to be written. We can help write that story by setting goals.” – Melody Beattie
As busy as 2017 was, we are even more enthusiastic about our plans for 2018. We will be launching a brand new online sales site where you can conveniently view, purchase, and have shipped all of our pieces for sale. AMusinGlass will also be holding regular open studio time for the public, every 2nd Tuesday of each month, starting on January 9th. People of all skill levels can come explore their creativity, under the guidance of our AMusinGlass artists. Most months will also feature an AMusinGlass class, covering a variety of areas, from Silver Alchemy to Sandblasting Tiles. Join us on January 20th for our first class of the year, where you can get hands-on experience with flow trivets!
Creative Gateways will also continue to have a variety of First Friday exhibits and Artist Spotlights, where you can meet our artists and see their work up close. Finally, the beautiful Creative Gateways gallery and its landscaped back patio will soon be available to rent out for personal events. As always, feel free to call, visit our website, or stop by the gallery, 7 days a week from 10am – 5pm, to get a detailed list of everything we have going on.
We appreciate everyone who has visited and supported us this past year, and have loved getting to know you all. We look forward to seeing you in 2018, and can’t wait to meet many new faces!
