Each month, the Creative Gateways studio chooses a theme to inspire our work and act as a focus for our events. Here’s what’s coming up in August…
Monthly theme: August – Noegenesis
We love to challenge ourselves, spark imagination, and look at things from a different perspective. And so, our August theme takes a word you might never of heard of: noegenesis. But what does it mean?
Noegenesis is a theory of how new knowledge is created, via these three process:
1.Observation: what do you notice?
Looking at the world around us is a vital part of being an artist. We constantly take notes on what we see and reflect on the images that surround us. That might mean pulling over at the side of the road to capture the evening light falling through the branches of a tree; looking out of the studio window at the trees and the sky framed within it; or noticing the rainbows in oil pooled on the sidewalk.
What can you see when you look around you? When did you last look at something with fresh eyes? What time of day, or place, suits you best when it comes to observing the beauty in the world?
Making connections is something most of us grow up doing as children – how often do we spot new patterns as adults? Perhaps it’s noticing the bright blue of the summer sky mirrored in the reflections of a backyard swimming pool. Connecting a flavor with a season, or observing a relationship between a line of traffic and a trail of ants.
What connections do you make? What comparisons arise in your mind when you allow thoughts to flow freely? What do colors, sounds or flavors remind you of?
3. Joining up the dots
The final stage of Noegenesis involves the creation of new knowledge as a result of these observations and connections. When we see how things are related or interconnected, our brains create new concepts to explain and understand them.
How can the connections we notice lead us to new understanding? What information can we see when different ideas are juxtaposed? What is waiting to be discovered?
First Friday: Our frontier!
We are looking forward to finding out what ideas come from this month’s First Friday event, and sharing our art with you. The connections, correlations and cross-pollinations coming out of our studio always spark discussion, and create a lively evening of art talk and creative connection. Click here for full details of how to join us – and in the meantime, enjoy the process of noegenesis in your own life!
