“Flow with whatever may happen and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.” – Zhuangzi

“Life is a series of natural and spontaneous changes. Don’t resist them – that only creates sorrow. Let reality be reality. Let things flow naturally forward in whatever way they like.” – Lao Tzu
Creative Gateways artist Michael Colpitts’ art is the embodiment of movement. Spontaneity and an organic feel are vital elements to Michael, and he sets up much of his artistic process around encouraging those elements. His materials, canvas, and technique help him capture a wild, creative force so that he may turn it into art. In his mixed media painting “Flirtation,” for instance, he uses smooth lines and amorphous shapes as a means to guide the viewer’s eye on a journey downwards. A flourish of bright red near the top grabs immediate attention before the contrast of white behind a dark figure works to guide the flow. In his piece “Flow 2,” Michael’s palette is more restricted, and yet an amazing sense of movement is still achieved. Shades of reds, pinks, and purples uplift the viewer, all guided by a contrasting dark green. These pieces, as well as many others, show Michael’s commitment to the organic element of flow.
